What are starter locs?

Starter locs (beginner locs) is the beginning of the loc process. When starting locs you can remain in the beginner stage anywhere from three to six months. Every person is different and your loc journey depends on several different factors.

What “traditional” methods are used to start dreadlocks?

The most commonly used methods to start locs are comb coils, two strand twist, individual braids, and free form.

Comb coils

Comb coils is a traditional method of starting locs. Coils are done by using an all natural. dreadlock serum (No gel, No wax) and a dreadlock coil comb. This process is usually done by a Dreadlock specialist who is also known as a “Loctician”. This method is our number one chosen process.

Two Strand Twist

This method is done by parting the hair and putting two strand in your entire head. It will usually take about one year for the two strand to disappear. It does take longer to loc your hair using this method. This method is also done by a loctician.

Individual Braids

This method is done by parting the hair and braiding the hair into individual braids. This method takes the longest to loc. However, the hair is less frizzy using this method. It will take about one year to a year and a half for the lines of the locs to disappear.

Free Form

Free form is done by simply allowing your hair to grow out and never touching your hair. You will only need to see a professional for your shampoo sessions and your moisturizing treatment sessions.

How do you take care of your locs?

Once you have started your locs it is very important to care for your locs and to follow the directions from your loctician. This will ensure a smooth locking process. Use a light leave-in conditioner and light oils to moisturize your locs. Do Not use heavy products as they do cause buildup.

What should I do if I have buildup in my locs?

Please book a detox session with one of our highly skilled locticians. Detox is a solution mixed together and used on your hair to breakup the buildup in locs. We only recommend you to get a detox 1-2 times per year.

Can I detox and color hair in the same day?

We do not recommend getting a hair color and a detox in the same day. However, this depends on the healthiness of the hair. Each client is different.

Palm Rolling Vs Interlocking

Palm rolling is a method used to maintain the new growth on your locs by rolling the hair in between your hands and securing the twisted hair in the same direction.

Interlocking is done by using a interlocking tool to sew together the new growth. Interlocking dreadlocks requires following a specific pattern with the help of a interlocking tool. If interlocking is done incorrect it can cause loc damage. This is why it is very important to seek a professional when choosing the interlocking method.

Healthy and well maintained hair can be styled. We do not recommend styling locs that are weak and breaking. If your locs are weak we recommend you to book a dreadlock repair session, or a dreadlock repair hair treatment.

What shampoo is recommended for locs?

Many manufacturers are not developing dreadlock focused shampoo. It is best to purchase shampoo that is residue friendly.
